Dental science, also called dental medicine and dental surgery, is a field of medicine which includes the study, identification, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and prevention of oral disorders, diseases, and chronic conditions. Oral problems are classified into two major categories: disease of the teeth and disease of the mouth (caries). The most common type of dental problem is tooth decay or dental caries. Other kinds of dental diseases include dental diseases related to wisdom teeth, implants, orthodontics, bridges, dentures, post nasal drip, oral surgery, oral cancer, periodontal diseases, gum disease, oral surgery, dental implants, and the like. Dentistry includes all these areas and many more.

Dental science seeks to achieve the best possible results in the shortest span of time by providing timely diagnosis, proper treatment, accurate management, and optimum preventive care. Dental specialists in child birth, childhood, and pregnancy have to deal with the most delicate of environments and must know how to deal with pediatric dentistry effectively. Dental science is also involved in the treatment of adults and nursing care. Oral medicine consists of the various techniques used for the diagnosis, preventative, therapeutic, and maintenance of oral health.

A dentist is a professional who specialises in the practice of dentistry. To become a dentist, one needs to complete a degree programme in either the field of biology, chemistry, mathematics or chemistry. After graduating, the candidates need to undergo a rigorous training period of 2 years at an institution approved by the State Board of Examiners to practise as a dentist. In addition to the regular classroom learning, the candidates are required to take part in hands-on dental practice. Upon completion of these requirements, the candidates can sit for the State Dental Examination.

It is easy to find a dentist in your locality as there are many dental clinics in all cities and towns. However, it is recommended that you find one who is well established so that you are assured of prompt and efficient dental services. The most important step in searching for a good dentist is finding a reputable clinic with a renowned status. Searching online will help you find these dentists in your area.

Dental schools provide specialised training in areas such as orthodontics, endodontics, dentistry, pediatric dentistry, gynecology, facial surgery, prosthodontics, speech pathology, medical ethics, human biology, microbiology, nutrition, public health, oral surgery, pediatrics, orthodontics, radiation oncology and rehabilitation. Some of these courses are conducted on campus in collaboration with local colleges or hospitals. During the final year of dental school, students also get to participate in the Masters program in Periodontics to enhance their specialization. Those who successfully complete the course are awarded a Master’s Dental Residence, which is designed to support the students towards a career in endodontics, periodontics, dental surgery, oral medicine, nutrition, public health, or forensic dentistry.

Apart from the coursework, students get to experience hands-on training by joining the dental surgery clinical programme. The programme is conducted under the supervision of a dentist experienced in the field and helps students gain practical skills in periodontics, oral surgery, dentistry, periodontics, bridges, root canal therapy, craniofacial surgery and pediatric dentistry. In order to become a dentist, a student needs to pass the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and then clear the pre-determined number of points to obtain the degree of DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery).
